1936年3月28日生于秘鲁第二大城市阿列基帕。早在出生前父母即已离异,出生后一年随母去玻利维亚的柯恰潘帕,与外祖父住在一起。1945年其父母重归于好,他随母返回秘鲁,在皮乌拉定居。1946年全家迁居利马。1957年他毕业于利马圣马可大学文学系,1959年到法国深造。
