卡尔·沙夫纳,毕生亲近海洋,是渔夫,也是海洋科学家,提倡复原海洋资源和生命力不遗余力,曾获普鸟慈善基金会“保护暨环境学人奖”他曾服务于“中大西洋渔业管理委员会”,并曾担任“史密生协会”的“海洋星球”顾问委员,以及“世界保护联盟”的“鲨鱼专家小组”成员。1990年,沙夫纳在“美国奥社邦协会”成立“活海洋计划”,并担任计划主任。目前他住在纽约,是耶鲁大学教授,卡尔·沙夫纳是2000年安娜文学奖获得者；获得1998年《纽约时报》卓越图书奖；1998年《洛杉矶时报》最佳非小说类图书奖；1998年《图书馆杂志》最佳科学图书奖。
