维吉尼亚・李・伯顿1909年8月30日生于美国马萨诸塞州的Newton Center,1968年10月15日去世。她的母亲是个诗人和音乐家,父亲是麻省理工学院的首任教务长。从小就生活在充满艺术气息的氛围中,她回忆童年时,人们聚集在市中心唱英格兰民歌、围着五月柱跳舞,父亲的礼物不是玩具而是故事书；8岁时由于母亲的健康原因,他们搬到加利福利亚的一个小镇,那里住着很多艺术家,镇里有三座剧场,经常有各种表演、彩排。伯顿儿时的理想是做一个芭蕾舞演员,中学时她得到一笔奖学金,去旧金山跟一位舞蹈教师学习芭蕾。路途遥远,她每天要做火车、换轮渡、再转有轨电车去学校,至少要花两个小时——她用来捕捉各种生活场景、给陌生人画速写。

由于要照顾生病的父亲,伯顿放弃了心爱的舞蹈事业,她在波士顿的一份报纸Boston Transcript找到一份画速写的工作,领导她的是当时一位知名的艺术评论家。在其后的两年半中,她画了大量当时杰出的舞蹈家和演员的速写。

1930年秋天,经朋友的介绍,伯顿去和乔治・德米特里厄斯学习绘画,第二年春天两人结婚。乔治不仅是一位优秀的艺术教师,而且是一位优秀的雕刻家。他们有两个儿子,大儿子阿瑞斯后来也成为在美国,甚至世界范围内都有影响的雕刻家；小儿子麦克毕业于哈佛大学,后来从商,近年来经常来中国投资、兴建娱乐设施。

伯顿一生创作了很多作品,最受欢迎¬的儿童读物包括：《小火车头》（1937）,《迈克・马力甘和他的蒸汽挖土机》（1939）,《神马卡莉索》（1941）和《小房子》（1942）,其中《小房子》一书在1943年获得了凯迪克大奖。
