美國南加州大學安納堡傳播學院教授,《洛杉磯時報》科學專欄作家（1994年迄今）,經常在《紐約客》、《紐約時報》、《新聞週刊》、《華盛頓郵報》、《哥倫比亞新聞評論》等媒體發表文章。

1995年、2004年、2005年三度獲得「美國最佳科學寫作獎 」,2002年獲得「美國最佳科學與自然寫作獎」。

由於頻頻獲獎,而有「科學寫作界之達文西」的封號。

著有《數學與頭腦相遇的地方》（The Universe and the Teacup）、《物理與頭腦相遇的地方》（First You Build a Cloud）等書。

柯爾女士成長於巴西首都里約熱內盧、美國紐約州,曾在東歐待過數年,早年的寫作焦點在政治評論與女性議題。

1980年代,與舊金山探險博物館（Exploratorium）創辦人法蘭克．歐本海默（Frank Oppenheimer）成為知交後,開始對科學產生濃厚興趣,從此鑽研科學,筆耕不輟。

育有一女一子,目前定居在加州聖摩尼卡。

台灣大學物理系畢業,美國康乃爾大學物理博士。曾在普林斯頓高等研究院博士後研究二年,鑽研超新星的形成及中子星的構造,奠定現代中子星理論的基礎。之後在美國航空暨太空總署（NASA）馬里蘭州高達太空飛行中心（Goddard Space Flight Center）擔任太空科學家及天文物理學家。
