Philosopher Mark Kingwell has taught aesthetic theory for ten years and knows how people struggle to articulate the way music works. He views Glenn Gould as a philosopher, someone who does his thinking with notes over time.

A supremely gifted artist and Canada’s most renowned classical musician of the 20th century, Glenn Herbert Gould (born Toronto Sept 25 1932; died Toronto Oct 4 1982) was a recording artist, radio and television broadcaster and producer, writer and an outspoken apologist for the electronic media.

Mark Kingwell is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto, a contributing editor of Harper's Magazine, and the critically acclaimed author of ten books. He teaches and writes frequently about philosophy, design and architecture, and pop culture, and has lectured to academic and popular audiences around the world. His books include Better Living: From Plato to Prozac and The World We Want. His latest book is Concrete Reveries: Consciousness and the City.
