Victor Turner here examines the rituals of the Ndembu in Zambia and develops his concept of aCommunitas,a which he characterizes as an absolute inter-human relation beyond any form of structure. The Ritual Process has acquired the status of a small classic since first published in 1969. Turner demonstrates how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. He extends Van Gennepas notion of the aliminal phasea of rites of passage to a more general level, and applies it to gain understanding of a wide range of social phenomena.

特纳于1920年出生于苏格兰。1950年4月离开罗得西亚－利文斯通社会学研究所（Rhodes-Livingstone Institute for Sociological Research）之后,他在曼彻斯特大学担任讲师职务,一直到1963年。不过他著述最丰的那几年是在美国度过的：最早是在斯坦福大学,然后在康奈尔大学、芝加哥大学,最后是在弗吉尼亚大学。1983年他在弗吉尼亚大学逝世。其代表作有：《一个非洲社会的分裂与延续》（1957）、《符号森林》（1967）、《苦难的鼓声》（1968）、《仪式过程》（1969）、《戏剧、场和隐喻》（1974）等。
