美国作家。1962年出生于美国纽约一个知识分子家庭。大学的毕业论文是他的第一部小说《系统的笤帚》（The Broom of the System,1987）,书名受哲学家维特根斯坦《逻辑哲学论》的启发,其内容、结构布局和碎片式叙事都与维特根斯坦的语言游戏理论形成呼应。

1996年,《无尽的玩笑》（Infinite Jest）这部被著名编辑迈克尔·皮奇惊叹为“我想出版这本书胜过想呼吸”的著作出版。尽管厚达1000多页,晦涩难懂,充满了脚注、缩写词以及杂糅的后现代语言,仍取得了巨大的成功。

2005年,《无尽的玩笑》更是被《时代》周刊评选为1923年以来世界百部最佳英语小说之一。此后,他相继发表了《头发奇特的女孩》等三部短篇小说集,以及《所谓好玩的事,我不会再做了》《思考龙虾》两部非虚构作品集。

2008年,华莱士在加利福尼亚的家中自杀。此前他一直在服用抗抑郁的药物。

2011年,其未完成作品《苍白的国王》出版,入围普利策奖最终名单。
