Jim Nashe has taken to the wide-open road in pursuit of 'a life of freedom', bankrolled by a large sum of money inherited on his father's dead. One fine summer morning he stops his car to offer a ride to the bedraggled figure of Jack Pozzi, itinerant gambler and card-player. Nashe finds himself taking a shine to the penniless younger man, even electing to stake him in an extraordinary game of poker, which Pozzi swears will be 'an honest-to-goodness walk down Jackpot Lane'. The designated suckers in this deal are Flower and Stone: two eccentric millionaire recluses living on a vast estate in Pennsylvania.
