Powers examines the art and politics of the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD) and shows that both were influenced by the rise of an educated, non-aristocratic public who questioned the authority of the ruling class at all levels.

包华石是美国密歇根大学中国艺术与文化中心的教授,同时也是这个中心培养中国学生的导师。1991年,其著作Art and Political Expression in Early China获得当年由Association of Asian Studies颁发的李文森奖（Levenson Prize）。他特别关注艺术在人的关系史中所扮演的角色,强调政治表达、人格和社会公义。近期,他又转向跨语际实践的研究领域,对现代早期中国和欧洲的文化交流问题提出置疑。
